emergency brooch
nov. 2020
You’re power strutting down the street in your favorite outfit when suddenly the world becomes a blur. The next thing you know, you’re sprawled on the pavement, your pants have split, and time stands still. Thankfully, you’re wearing your anti-malfunction brooch today. With safety pins, rubber bands and a tiny knife, you won’t have to flash anyone on your way home.
This is a brooch intended to save its wearer from wardrobe mishaps, as a play on mini emergency kits and taking the shape and texture of pieces of masking tape. At the same time, it also questions to what extent we can actually prepare for accidents, especially when the tools become a burden when carried around everywhere. Does the decorative nature and heavy weight of this piece make it less useful as a functional object?
